In round two, we are going to look at viewing angles on LED and plasma televisions. (In part one we looked at the LED and plasma power consumption question.) While older LCD technology (ie non-LED) had some problems with viewing angles not being as good as plasma, the new backlit LED LCD HDTVs are getting closer to rivaling plasma TVs when it comes to viewing angle.
LED HDTV Viewing Angle
As we said, LED televisions have less of a problem with viewing angle because of the backlit technology, but it is still going to be more noticeable than with a plasma television. That said, in another year or so, this problem may be “fixed” on the LED televisions that are produced. For now, however, LED loses round two for viewing angle.
Plasma HDTV Viewing Angle
What more is there to say, really? Plasma comes out ahead when it comes to viewing angle. Because of how the picture is created on the screen, it holds up even if you are looking at it from an angle. For many people, this is the deal breaker which makes them stick with plasma. Still, as we said, in another six months or a year at the most, LED might overtake plasma on this front as well. Just as plasma fixed their problems with burn-in (for the most part), LED TVs may fix the problem of viewing angle. But for now, plasma is the clear winner for this round.
LED vs Plasma – Where Next?
The running score is one for LED and one for Plasma HDTVs. If you have a suggestion on what features we should look at next – or if we should go more in depth on any topic we’ve covered – leave a comment below and let us know what you think. There are REAL people on this website and our feelings are hurt when you don’t leave a comment.
Thanks!

For my money, I clearly prefer the LED system. The overall brightness and color reproduction give it an almost 3D (Without Glasses) affect. The TV’s are lighter and easier to Install and tend to use less energy. From a service standpoint, if I’m going to spend $1000 or more for a TV, I want something that can be serviced. Ask anyone who has attempted to find service for a Plasma TV and you will discover what I’m talking about. The 600 HZ refresh rate for me is not as much of an advantage as the Plasma “Camp” would have you believe. A refresh rate such as 600 HZ can sometimes “work” against you depending upon the program material. There is a reason why you can now purchase Plasma 40/42″ TV’s for less than $400.
Is there a difference in environmental impact? Is it easier to recycle LED than Plasma? Are elements from Plasma harmful for the environment?
I have a sugestion for the next topic, LED vs Plasma: brightness. I noticed that Plasma Tvs usually offer more than 1.000 cd per m2 of brightness, as long as LED tvs usually offer 500 cd per m2. I’d like to know if this less-brightness quality by the LED tvs are better or worse than the rich brightness ratio of Plasma Tvs…
Depends on what's obstructing the view.
A show is staged in a certain way, with every character, parts of the set, lighiting and movement carefully crafted
lol yeah so do I. I can’t imagine people spending 60 grand on a plasma tv, let alone a lcd tv. lol I’m not rich though.
also known as light emitting diode, its funny cause no its not, who the fuck calls it that?? when its easier just saying led, i know led stands for that but, LOL
